Imagination Connoisseur, Tyler Vickrey, shines a little light on the sci-fi movie SUNSHINE (2007) directed by Danny Boyle. Have you seen it? Leave your review in the comments section, below.
I wanted to drop a quick letter with a thanks and a question.
First, thanks for recommending THE INVITATION a couple weeks ago. I remember you saying not to watch any trailers or read anything about it, and I’m so glad I took your advice. It’s very rare that a movie can keep you guessing any more, and this movie did that in spades. It was so refreshing and I highly recommend it.
My unrelated question is to ask what you think about the 2007 Danny Boyle film SUNSHINE. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard your take on it. It’s one of those movies that I fell in love with at first sight, as I have a soft spot in my heart for sci-fi space horror. It’s a pretty polarizing movie and while I guess I understand why, I disagree with it.
The only real problem people seem to have is that in the 3rd act, it turns into an EVENT HORIZON-esque, slasher in space.
I had no problem with it. But the interesting thing is that the first 2/3rds are a pretty serious, logical science fiction movie, then it takes the hard turn, almost into an entirely different movie.
Individually, I find all the parts pretty brilliant. Danny Boyle’s direction is spot on, the score is equal parts ethereal and epic in scope, it has a fantastical aesthetic and vision of space, the sun and the like, and then the cast. Wow. A who’s who of great international actors, including Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Mark Strong.
It’s just one of those movies that has stuck with me all these years after and all I ever see is bad reviews. Seems like it might be a movie you could be into.
