Saturday matinees are a perfect place for a kaiju battle. And you know what’s better than kaiju fighting one another? Kaiju teaming up with giant robots to fight other Kaiju.

Jet Jaguar was the earliest example of a fan-service in a Godzilla film, the result of a contest Toho had in 1972. Children were asked to come up with a new hero for them to square off against Megalon. The winner of the contest was an elementary school student, who submitted the drawing of a robot which superficially resembled Ultraman and other popular robot warriors. Godzilla and Gigan were added to the story to make the movie more popular.

Here’s a quick summary:

The undersea nation of Seatopia sends the gigantic Megalon to destroy the world above – and it’s up to Godzilla and a size-shifting robot, Jet Jaguar, to defeat him.

Is this Godzilla’s best work? Maybe Megalon’s, but we’ve seen better from Godzilla, frankly. He kind of phones this one in.

But, that’s just our opinion.
